Software: BluePhoneElite

So today while I was perusing The Apple Blog I read in one of the comments about an application, BluePhoneElite, for OS X that takes advantage of both your phone's and computer's blue tooth connection by integrating your phone with your computer applications. It can do things like pause iTunes or DVD player when an incoming call or SMS message is received, or you can even iChat to respond to an SMS message.

One of the interesting features was "proximity behaviors" which were described as:

"BluePhoneElite can detect when your phone enters and exits range of your computer, even when the phone is disconnected. BluePhoneElite can start and stop the screen saver or pause and un-pause iTunes and DVD Player. It can even set your iChat away message or run a custom AppleScript!"

I wouldn't mind my computer waking up from sleep when I walked into the room and even launching Firefox or something. I'm sure the proximity feature can be used in a lot of interesting ways depending on the creativity of the user (Please post your ideas to comments).

I'm not sure if it's worth the $20 price tag yet, but I'm giving it a whirl. I'm always up for trying novelty products like this and don't mind throwing down a bit of cash for them.

Quick Tip: Record Short Movie Clips Without Ripping a Whole DVD

For work I often have to record one to two minute movie clips to use in presentations. It's way too time consuming to record the whole DVD then import it into iMovie, clip the section I need, and then re-encode it.

Instead, I use a program called Snapz Pro X. Snapz "allows you to effortlessly record anything on your screen, saving it as a Quicktime movie or screenshot that can be emailed, put up on the web, or passed around however you please."

The user interface is intuitive and it only took me about five minutes to figure out how to record my movie. To get movie clips I load up DVD player and set the video to "half size." I then start Snapz (note that command+shift+3 opens snapz once the program is launched) and select "movie." Under movie I use the following settings:

With the selection style set to normal you can simple resize the box to whatever you want (I drag my box so it fits over the dvd menu). Two interesting features that can be selected here are the ability to record a microphone track and the ability of having the cursor visible. These features would be highlighted if you wanted to record a screencast (a movie of you doing something and explaining what you are doing) which you can later post on a website or send to a friend.

After you are all cued up with your movie and ready to start recording simply hit enter in Snapz from the "movie settings" screen. A pop up box will appear asking what you want to call your movie. Once you name it and hit enter Snapz begins recording whatever is on your screen. To end your recording simply hit command+shift+3. Another pop up window will appear asking if you want to delete or save your movie. If you decide to save it you can set your video settings here.

Snapz is definately worth the money and can be used for much more than simply recording dvd clips and screencasts.

Quick Tip: Run Easily Commands and Snippets When You Don't Know the Keyboard Shortcuts

Whenever I start playing with a new bundle in Textmate, I find myself using the Bundles context menu a lot because I don't yet know the keyboard shortcuts. Two other quick ways to run bundle commands and snippets are useful in this case: first, if you think you know the bundle item name, you can press

^ ⌘ T

and start typing the name of the command and Textmate will autocomplete it. If you don't know the bundle item name, you can use the gear menu at the bottom of the window to look through the items in the bundle you're currently using. I knew there was a shortcut for this, but always forgot it, so I looked it up today.

^ esc

will open the gear menu. I'll be using this one alot.

Top ten Firefox Keyboard Shorcuts

  2. ⌘ + d = bookmark current page
    ⌘ + k = focus google search bar
  3. ⌘ + f = find
  4. ⌘ + g = find next
  5. ⌘ + t = new tab
  6. ⌘ + w = close current tab
  7. ⌘ + shift + t = reopen accidentally closed tab (Best one ever!)
crtl + tab = tab through tabs crtl + shift + tab = tab backwards through tabs

Bonus for Delicious Extension users:

  1. ⌘ + Shift + . = pulls delicious page if you have delicious firefox extension installed

Custom iGoogle Skins

Hackaddict reader Greg writes:

"I noticed your post from here http://hackaddict.blogspot.com/2007/03/quick-tip-skin-your-google-ig.html and wanted to let you know about my new gadget which allows custom skins for iGoogle. See http://bonstio.net/skins. Feedback welcome of course - I hope you like!"
And like it I do! I've been wanting to customize my iGoogle skin since the very fist day I used it. I haven't had time to create my own yet, but the included custom ones are pretty neat and the instructions are pretty clear on how to go about doing it. I can't wait to start designing. Thanks Greg!

5 Places to Look for Jobs Online

I'm at the point in my life where job hunting is my number on priority. In my search I have used following websites:

  1. CareerBuilder - the largest online job search site in the US. Good starting point with notable features including: resume view tracker to see who is looking at your resume, advanced job search/filter system, a job reccomendation engine based on your resume and past job searches, a job alert system based on your inputted preferences for a "dream job." Caeerbuilder is basically a one stop shop, and definately a great starting point.
  2. Monster - second largest online job search site in the US. Monster has a decent job search function and is easy to navigate; however, the sign up process leaves a lot to be desired - it is riddled with ads and offers (which continue to be seen throughout the site). Monster and CareerBuilder are basically the same idea and the end result is two very similar sites with lots of jobs.
  3. Doostang - notable features include: job bookmarking, facebook integration, gmail login for mass friend invites, advanced search filtering system. not so notable features: job search is limited by your account status - many times you need to be part of a group or a premium member to view job listings.
  4. LinkedIn - LinkedIn puts a social network spin on the job hunt. You start by building your network while everyone else does the same. Then you can look for companies and see how contacts/friends are related to those companies. Hopefully, you can use your connection to get an introduction/recommendation for the job you want.

  5. Craigslist - although it has an old school feel and limited search functions, thousands of jobs are posted on Craigslist so if you are willing to do the work, the job is out there.

Notable Mention: Many colleges have career networks available to them. These are a great starting place for recent graduates and alumni alike. If you don't have access to one of these networks, have no fear - just ask a current college student for their login information and begin browsing.

You guys know any more job hot spots? If so, please post them to the comments and let us know what you like/dislike about them.

Software: Wifind

Today's software of the day is a little app called Wifind.
From their website:
"Wireless Network Locator
WiFind shows you if wireless networks are locked or unlocked and their signal strength - right in the airport menu. It's a tiny lightweight plugin for OS X that makes connecting to reliable wireless networks quicker and easier. Whether you're at home, the office or at your favorite cafe - WiFind will help you locate a signal and start browsing!"
If you're on the move a lot, like I am, the $8 price tag is well worth it in saved time alone. No longer do you have randomly click on networks until you hopefully find an open one.

iCal Mobile (or the closest thing I could get...)

Being new to the windows mobile world I am slowly, but steadily being introduced to the crappy built in programs and having to replace them one by one. One of the crappier bundled programs is the calendar app. Not only did it take me a few days to figure out the best way to import my google calendar events onto my phone, which I will address in a later post, (I tried about five different methods) but once I got them onto my phone they were pretty much useless. My calendars were no longer color coded leaving every event looking exactly the same, a grey triangle in the upper right hand corner of the calendar day.
Enter Pocket Informant 2007. Not only does it keep my calendars color coded, but it launches into the view that you closed it in (ie, I like having my calendar open to a month view so I can quickly see any upcoming events - I couldn't figure out how to do that in the built in calendar app).
At $24.95 Pocket Informant is a steal. It has so many features that even after a week of use I am still discovering new ones. I highly recommend giving Pocket Informant a try if you're as fed up with the windows mobile calendar app as I was.

Windows Mobile iPhone Like Contact Manager

Pocket CM is hands down the coolest contact manager available for windows mobile phones. Many of you are probably familar with Contact Manager, well Pocket CM is Contact manager older brother and the good news is that it no longer relies on the .net framework.
The most notiable changes between Contact Manager and Pocket CM I've noticed are:
  • Pocket CM is a hell of a lot faster
  • Pocket CM's contact list is divided into letter categories
  • Pocket CM's interface is prettier and runs smoother
  • Pocket CM's has intergrated text messaging including a keyboard and a message threader (and the animation that brings you to the SMS screen is pretty slick). The new SMS is by far the best improvement -- Very cool!

Overall, Pocket CM is a huge jump from Contact Manager and leaps and bounds away from the default windows contact manager program. I highly recommend downloading Pocket CM and giving it a whirl.

Pocket CM can be downloaded here.

Tip: Send Notes to Your Mobile Phone More Easily

There are lots of times when I want to send myself a snippet of info to my phone, like an address, someone's phone number, or a reminder. I have a hard time remembering by mms address, though, so I created a gmail filter to forward messages to my phone. This is nice because I can give it to my friends, too, and tell them to just email my.email+m@gmail.com to send a message directly to my phone when they don't have my number or their cell phone handy.

Here's what I did:

In gmail, go to Settings > Filters > Create a new filter.

In the To: field, enter your gmail address with a +m (or whatever) before the @ sign.

Click Next step, and choose the following options:

Forward to: your sms/mms address

Apply the label: mobile (this is optional)

Skip the inbox (also up to you)

Save the filter.

Your mms address consists of your folder @ one of the domain names listed below, depending on your provider:

provider sms mms
Cingular cingularme.com mms.mycingular.com
Verizon vtext.com vzwpix.com
AT&T mmode.com mmode.com
Nextel messaging.nextel.com messaging.nextel.com
Sprint messaging.sprintpcs.com messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-mobile tmomail.net tmomail.net

My New Google Calendar Setup

As soon as I saw the new Google Calendar command line interface I decided to give Google Calendar another chance. Previously, I had ditched it in favor of Backpack--I tried using both for sending myself timely SMS reminders and found that the Backpack Dashboard Widget made entry easier. I like not having to go to a web page to do something like create a reminder for myself if I can help it.

One thing I found annoying about the Backpack widget was the way you set the time for the reminder using a dropdown. (I also like not using my mouse if I can help it.)

I went back to give Google Calendar another shot when the command line interface came out because I knew it had an awesome "Quick Add" feature which allows you to enter reminders like "7:30pm tomorrow get a beer with EJ"--much faster than using dropdown menus. I got everything setup nicely, and I have to say that capturing reminders is even easier than with the Basecamp widget.

Here's my setup:

Calendar Settings

One of the first things I tweaked before I even started messing with gcalcli was my Google Calendar notification settings. Go to Google Calender and click the dropdown next to your default calendar in the left pane and choose Notifications to change your reminder settings. I chose to have events default to sending me an Email and SMS 5 minutes before an event occurs, as well as a popup notification an hour before the event.

Setting up gcalcli on OS X

Getting gcalcli working on OS X was a bit of a pain in the ass. The first thing I recommend doing is making sure the python command in your PATH points to the latest version of Python. For some reason python on my machine was version 2.4 and this caused me problems, so I installed the latest version of Python and did the following to make sure the python command used this version:

sudo rm /usr/bin/pythonsudo ln -s /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/bin/python /usr/bin/python

Once you have the latest version of Python, you need to get the GData Python module, ElementTree Python module, and dateutil Python module. Links for all these are here.

After installing all the pre-requisites, get gcalcli from the gcalcli project page on google code. I put gcalcli in ~/Documents/scripts/gcalcli. You'll also want to edit this file, entering your login information (email, password).

A few other optional things I did to make using gcalcli easier were:

Add gcalcli to $PATH

This allows you to call gcalcli no matter what directory you're currently working in in the terminal. Add this line to your ~/.bash_profile:

export PATH="~/Documents/scripts/:$PATH"

Create an alias for gcalcli quick add

Add this line to your ~/.bash_profile if you want to be able to type q '7:30 barber' instead of gcalcli quick '7:30 barber':

alias q="~/Documents/scripts/gcalcli quick"

With all this stuff setup, creating a reminder for myself is super easy: I just hit ⌘ Shift i to open iTerm (see Setup Global Keyboard Shortcuts to Open Any App with Quicksilver), then type q '9pm write blog post about gcal' and I have captured the thought and can get it out of my mind and focus on whatever task is at hand.

Enable SMS Quick Add to Google Calendar

One final addition I just made to my Gcal setup is making SMS Quick Add events easy. If you have Google Calendar setup with your mobile phone, you can text 9pm write blog post about gcal to 48368 to quick add an event / reminder. I added 48368 to my phonebook under "Google Calendar" to make adding reminders from my phone almost as easy as doing it from my computer.

The problem I've had with most reminder / todo software in the past is that it's too hard to enter tasks or reminders; hence, I'd always give up on using them and revert to pencil and paper. My new Gcal setup makes capturing ideas super easy, so I think I'm gonna stick with it for a while.

Use Gmail with IMAP and Apple Mail

Gmail just announced that you can now use IMAP to access Gmail--this means all your sent messages will be synchronized, and your labeling / deletion / folder management will also be synchronized. Awesome!

Just set this up according to this tutorial.

Iphone Windows mobile skin

UPDATE: I've updated the skin so that it now displays number of missed calls and number of new text messages. Have fun!

UPDATE V1.3: The weather icon now displays the current temp (aka the last temp weather watcher retrieved) instead of "73" all the time. That being said, the current version of the skin must have weather watcher mobile installed to work correctly.

UPDATE V1.4: Youtube anyone? This has been tested and works in both WM5 and WM6.I read an article on Lifehacker recently which described two different methods to skin your windows mobile phone to look like an iPhone. The first method uses a program that constantly runs on your phone to apply the skin, while the second method uses a combination of the mobile aps RL today and wisbar advance to apply the theme.I started out using the first method because the Lifehacker author recommended it. I must admit it looked awesome, but it was highly unstable and I never got any notification icons for things like missed calls or text messages (they were there but behind the skin). Another major flaw with it was that since it was a program I could accidentally close the skin if I got overzealous while closing other open applications.
The second method was harder to set up, and it took me forever to get it look exactly how I wanted; however, many of the headaches and frustrations were caused by inadequate instructions which I amended and added a lot of information to for ya'll. The included background was also causing a problem, so I redid it and included it in the zip. With my instructions this method should only take you about thirty minutes to set up and the results are stunning. You will have a reliable and functional skin in no time.

I started by doing a hard reset on my phone (I have a AT&T 8125 Smartphone). Next I installed all of the applications and then I was finally ready for the skin.
